Do I need planning permission?
You do not require planning permission to board a loft for domestic storage. Planning permission is only required for major structural alterations or large attic and loft conversions intended for habitable living extensions (such as bedrooms or bathrooms).
However, while local authority planning permission isn't needed for storage boarding, ensuring structural safety and compliance requires professional evaluation.

In many homes, existing timber ceiling joists are not adequate on their own to safely support storage loads. Standard ceilings are engineered solely to carry the weight of the plasterboard ceiling below. Any extra weight from stored items must never be placed directly onto existing ceiling joists.

- Newer Properties: In most modern homes, the structure allows for a simple raised sub-frame system raised to the correct height to avoid loft insulation compression or removal.
